Important Items To Pack

Pack medical records, doctor's diagnosis with previous medical treatments and x-rays.

Cynthia had her medical documentation scanned into a computer and placed on a CD-ROM to save space in her suitcase.

Money and Credit Cards:

In January of 2001, the U.S. dollar became legal tender currency and major credit cards are accepted in most places.

Immigration requirements:

A valid passport, return ticket or proof of onward passage. A visa or tourist card is needed in a few cases (visas are free to U. S. citizens).

Tourist cards cost US$10 cash and can be purchased at the airport. Ours was valid for 90 days.(We were handed two small forms for customs to fill out on the plane before we arrived in San Salvador. Make sure you bring a pen on the plane.)

There is little exhaust emission control in El Salvador. I had difficulty breathing due to the toxic fumes. This only affected me while driving. Had I been aware of this prior to arriving, I would have brought a medical face mask.

Leave room in your suitcase so you won't have to purchase more luggage in El Salvador.

Typically patients receive 1-2 lb box of Bryomixol to take home along with other medical supplies.
